Mastering the Catalog Filter
What It Is, When to Use It, and How

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed browsing your growing image library in Photo Supreme, there’s one feature that can bring instant clarity: the Catalog Filter. Whether you're working with thousands of images or just trying to isolate a specific type of file, the Catalog Filter is a quiet powerhouse. We’ll break down what the Catalog Filter is, when to use it, and how to make it work for you.

What Is the Catalog Filter?

The Catalog Filter in Photo Supreme is a global filtering tool that temporarily limits what’s visible across your entire catalog. It doesn’t delete or move any images; it simply hides everything that doesn’t match your selected criteria.

Think of it as a giant sieve: only the images that meet your filter settings will flow through and appear in your catalog views, folders, and categories.

Examples of what you can filter by:

  • Star rating

  • Color labels

  • File type (e.g., RAW, JPEG)

  • Date ranges

  • Specific metadata (e.g., only from one specific camera model)

  • Specific catalog labels

  • Folder locations

When Should You Use It?

Here are some practical reasons to use the Catalog Filter:

  1. Focus Your Workflow
If you’re working on only 5-star images or just RAW files, the filter will hide everything else, so you can stay focused.

  2. Metadata Cleanup
Want to review only images missing metadata or with certain tagging errors? Set up a filter to isolate just those.

  3. Improve Performance
Filtering out large chunks of your catalog (e.g., only show this year’s work) can improve responsiveness when dealing with massive libraries.

  4. Hide What You Don’t Need
Temporarily hide rejected images, or those with a “To Review” label. It’s great for decluttering without deleting.

  5. Work By Time Period
Need to export, tag, or review everything from 2025? Set a date filter and work without distraction.

How to Use the Catalog Filter

Step-by-Step:

  1. Open the Catalog Filter panel
You'll find it at the top of the Catalog Tree on the left side of the screen. Look for the funnel icon.

  2. Enable the filter
Click the funnel button to activate the Catalog Filter. Once it’s on, only items matching your criteria will appear.

  3. Set your criteria
Click the + icon to choose what you want to filter by:

    • Rating (e.g., ≥ 4 stars)

    • Color labels

    • File types

    • Date range

    • Folder location

    • Version state (e.g., only Main Versions)

    • An Advanced Search definition

  4. Browse your catalog as usual
All views, including Folder, Category, Portfolio, and Search, will now only show filtered results.

  5. Disable the filter when done
Click the Catalog Filter funnel icon again to return to your full catalog.

Pro Tips

  • Combine filters: You can layer multiple criteria, like “RAW only + ≥ 3 stars + not GEO tagged”

  • Temporary use: It’s a perfect tool for session-based tasks; just turn it off when you're done.

  • No risk: It doesn’t affect your actual files or structure; just visibility.

Final Thoughts

The Catalog Filter might be one of the most powerful features in Photo Supreme. Whether you're organizing, editing, exporting, or reviewing, it helps you work faster and cleaner by showing you exactly what you need: nothing more, nothing less.

Try it out during your next session. You might be surprised at how much time (and sanity) it saves.
