Pair Photo Supreme with DxO PhotoLab for a Clean, Reliable Workflow

Organizing in Photo Supreme and editing in DxO PhotoLab

Combining a powerful Digital Asset Manager with a high-end RAW editor can dramatically improve your photography workflow. One of the most effective pairings is Photo Supreme for organization and DxO PhotoLab for image processing. This guide focuses on a practical, no-friction setup, especially how to configure external editing properly, handle exported files, and keep your catalog tidy using stacking.

This combination is a powerful, fully non-subscription alternative to Adobe Lightroom-centric workflows, and for many photographers it can replace the need for Adobe subscriptions entirely.

Why This Combo Works

Each tool excels at a different part of the photography pipeline:

  • Photo Supreme: Cataloging, tagging, searching, and organizing large photo libraries

  • DxO PhotoLab: RAW processing, noise reduction (DeepPRIME), optical corrections, and fine editing

By combining them, you avoid clutter and get best-in-class performance in both areas.

Step 1: Start with a Solid Folder Structure

Before importing anything, make sure your folder structure is consistent and logical.

For example:

Photos/
2026/
    2026-04-Trip-to-Paris/

Both Photo Supreme and DxO will rely on this structure, so consistency matters.

Step 2: Import and Organize in Photo Supreme

  1. Import your folders into Photo Supreme

  2. Add metadata such as:

    • Keywords

    • Ratings

    • Labels

This becomes your single source of truth for organization.

Step 3: Configure DxO PhotoLab as an External Application

To streamline your workflow, you should configure DxO PhotoLab as an external application inside Photo Supreme.

  1. Go to:Preferences → Other Settings → External Applications

  2. Add a new application:

    • Name: DxO PhotoLab

    • Path: Select the DxO PhotoLab executable on your system

Once configured, DxO will appear in the External Applications bar, above the thumbnails.

Step 4: Send Images to DxO PhotoLab

With the external application set up, sending files is quick and intuitive:

  • Select one or more RAW files in Photo Supreme

  • Click the DxO PhotoLab icon in the External Applications bar

DxO PhotoLab will open immediately with the selected files.

Step 5: Edit in DxO PhotoLab

In DxO, perform your usual adjustments:

  • Optical corrections (automatic)

  • Noise reduction (DeepPRIME / DeepPRIME XD)

  • Exposure and color adjustments

  • Local edits if needed

All edits remain non-destructive and are stored in .dop sidecar files.

Step 6: Export Your Edited Images

When you're done editing:

  1. Click Export to Disk

  2. Choose your format, e.g.:

    • JPEG for delivery

    • TIFF for high-quality output

  3. Export to the same folder as the original RAW file (recommended)

Step 7: Bring Exported Files into Photo Supreme (Important)

Photo Supreme does not automatically detect new files created outside of its import process.

To make your DxO exports visible:

  1. In Photo Supreme, right-click on thumbnail that you just edited

  2. Select Operations → Verify Folders for FilesYou can also select the Folder, right click and then Verify Folder

  3. Photo Supreme will scan the folder and register any new files (such as your exported JPEGs or TIFFs)

This step is essential: without it, your edited files won’t appear in your catalog.

Step 8: Keep Things Organized with Stacking

After verifying the folder, you’ll see both your RAW files and exported versions. To keep things clean, group them using stacking:

  • Select the RAW file and its corresponding exported image(s)

  • Create a stack

    • Right click on a selected thumbnail

    • Stacking → Stack Selected Files

Why stacking matters:

  • Keeps related files grouped together

  • Reduces clutter in your catalog

  • Makes browsing and selecting much faster

Instead of multiple separate files, you get a single, organized group.

Best Practices for a Smooth Workflow
  • Do all metadata and tagging in Photo Supreme first

  • Use DxO strictly for image editing

  • Always run Verify Folder after exporting from DxO

  • Use stacking consistently to maintain a clean catalog

  • Keep exports in the same folder as originals

Workflow Recap

  1. Import and organize in Photo Supreme

  2. Configure DxO as an external application

  3. Send images using the External Applications bar

  4. Edit and export from DxO
